2016 Hell of the West (Goondiwindi) race report.
Team: The Romans
2k swim – Mick Gray
80k ride – Bec Gray
20k run – Tahnee Duff (@tahneekd)
After riding in a team last year my aspirations of competing solo were dashed by leg issues so a swim it was. Luckily for me it was back in the McIntyre river rather than the ‘duckpond’. It was a straight out and back swim. I managed to find some space pretty quickly until I started to take in the back markers of previous waves which mucked up my rythym having to zig zag through with next to no visibility in the murky water. I managed not to swallow too much water, only copped 1 low blow, and most importantly didn’t drown to finish @ 36mins 44sec.
Bec optimistcally wanted to maintain a 30kph avg speed which she’d only previously done over the 20km sprint distance. It’s a 40km out and back course on the Gore Hwy, nice and flat but buffeted by strong winds. She went out hard into the headwind and brought it home strong in an awesome 31kph avg speed for the 80 long km’s @ 2hrs 35mins.
Tahnee had the pleasure of banging out 20km run in stifling heat wanting to break the 5:30/km pace. With a cheersquad of family and friends she did that and more @ 1hr 45min.
With transitions thrown in for good measure we finished in @ 5hrs 03min or 36th out of 106 teams.
We’ll definitely be back for more, maybe third time lucky for a solo attempt for me if my body behaves. Great town, friendly people, and a well run event.
